Our Story

Broken Puppet Theatre Company was founded originally as a subsiduary of White Tiger Creative Studios, our producer Clare’s graphic design and digital production studio.

Set up in 2000 when Clare was just 18, White Tiger Creative produced short films which branched into the theatre environment through her drama degree and work at the barbican theatre from 2008 onwards.

In 2009, Clare began working on promotional material for a then fledgling dance theatre company, Symbiotic. Later, successfully obtaining funding for and co-developing their community programme (known as ‘Don’t Mention The Gorilla!’) With Artistic Director Kev Johnson.

In response to this highly regarded theatre production programme for adults with experience of mental ill health, a plan was hatched to develop a similar project, aimed at supporting children to engage pro-actively with their mental and emotional well being.

While taking a necessary break to recover from a high impact car accident, Clare began making puppets for use in such a project. After numerous research and development sessions – and roping in a few creatively minded friends to help – ‘The Aziki Project’ came into being under White Tiger Creative; allowing Symbiotic to retain its focus on working with adults and developing their touring productions.

Appearing locally in schools, at festivals and visiting a couple of children’s hospices, the Aziki project had to be put on hold in 2013 due to Clare’s continuing health issues, but in 2014 after learning to live with the restraints of a newfound ‘disability’, our puppetry work was relaunched under the ‘Broken Puppet Theatre’ brand, with a new team, and a revitalised ambition.

Broken Puppet Co currently comprises of a core team of 3, headed by founder Clare ‘Jay’ McCarthy and Co-Founders Marie Rogers and Leah Battershall.

With extended support from a lovely bunch of freelancers and other specialist professionals as required by each project.
