Meet the Team

Broken Puppet Co currently comprises of a core team of 3, headed by founder Clare ‘Jay’ McCarthy and Co-Founders Marie Rogers and Leah Battershall.

With extended support from an extended team of freelance practitioners as and when their special skills are required.

As a team we all have our own unique perspectives, experiences and specialist knowledge, which we bring with us from all kinds of personal and professional backgrounds…




Clare is an experienced all-round creative practitioner, who launched and ran local film production company White Tiger Creative Studios for 15 years.

Clare was also company manager and director at Symbiotic Theatre C.I.C for over 4 years, and regularly freelances as a creative producer and theatre/education facilitator.

She holds a first class BA (Hons) in Drama, alongside numerous local youth and community practice qualifications.

Clare is also an emerging writer and is constantly developing her puppet making skills through courses both locally and online.

After being diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyletis, a complex and painful neuro-immune disease, Clare made the decision to retire from active film making work and pursue her love of all things puppet, theatre and people related, and that’s how Broken Puppet Theatre emerged, really!

Marie is a healthcare assistant and support worker with experience in a diverse range of settings, including mental health institutions, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres, and also in prisons.

She also holds various healthcare and first aid qualifications, and is a trained reflexologist.

Also a trainee puppet maker, Marie has a passion for marionettes and acts as community producer for Broken Puppet- A role which draws on her skills as a support worker in many of the complex social settings we work in.




Leah is a qualified Childminder who specialises in Early Years Development. Leah also holds a Drama in Education Degree and is OFSTEAD approved, with all relevant credentials.

With 3 children of her own leah is a talented and practical member of Broken Puppet’s core team, with a passion for story telling, shadow puppetry and puppet making – especially with under 8’s!

 Our support team includes…

Claire has recently joined the team as our grants manager, thanks to support from Arts Council England. Claire is an experienced freelance project manager and professional dancer. She has supported numerous start up social enterprises including Plymouth Dance and Exim Dance. We’re really happy to have Claire on board as she supports the areas of our business management that would otherwise be neglected or additionally challenging due to our invisible disabilities. 


Bekkie is a qualified biomedical scientist, a busy mum of 3 and a top costume creator! She is also our admin and accountancy wizzard, providing the business-savvy side to our little social enterprise as and when we need her.

Lizzie is a GP Secretary by day, a Rainbows/Brownies and Guides leader by evenings, and a puppeteer/workshop assistant for us when she’s got time. Lizzie also holds a Drama and Education degree, and is an energetic and skilled leader with children of all ages.

Siobhan is a busy mum of 2 and youth and community administrator, who hopes to join our team as a trainee drama therapist in the not too distant future. Siobhan holds a Drama and Education degree and studied with Clare, Leah and Lizzie, who graduated together in 2010.
We are also very grateful for the support we recieve from freelance theatre practitioners Alix Harris and Jon Nash, who will step in to help facilitate workshops and direct some of our performance work on a per project basis.
